Chinese foreign ministry said that China will respond if the United States implements a new tariff ahead U.S. President Donald Trump's expected announcement of the new tariffs on Chinese goods worth 200 billion dollars, ministry spokesman adding that any talks between the two countries should be held on an equal footing.

A widely-circulated Chinese newspaper warned that China would not only play the role of defense in its escalating war with the United States. Wall Street Journal quoted Chinese officials saying that Beijing may refuse to participate in the proposed trade talks with Washington later this month if the U.S. administration continues its path of implementing the additional tariffs.

The United States and China have already imposed a $ 50 billion tariffs on each other's goods in an escalating dispute in the past few months.
