ECB member: There is room to move away from bond buys

25 Apr 2018 03:20 PM

The strong growth of the eurozone economy provides room for the ECB to exit its bond buying program, but monetary policy must be gradually tightened, and policy moves should be well simplified, Vitas Vasiliauskas said.

"Bond purchases will gradually end rather than do so abruptly, ensuring a smooth transition long enough," Vasiliauskas said. "Any further steps will be well discussed, data-based and gradual, and providing sufficient time for markets to adapt."

He added that we should be prepared to market volatility, and that the ECB's Board of Governors had already set its own agenda for its next long-term steps.
