ECB's Makuch is considering leaving his post early

European Central Bank member Jozef Makuch said he is considering resigning from his post as governor of the Slovak central bank to allow the parliament to appoint a successor before an election expected to be divisive in the spring of 2020.

That would avoid the possibility of political wrangling that would lead to his post vacant for long time as in Slovenia, which has been unable to pick a new governor since March. Makuch, whose term ends in 2021, told reporters he considered Finance Minister Peter Kazimir a suitable alternative.

Opinion polls show that as many as 8 parties may be elected to the parliament in the 2020 elections, with the ruling coalition losing its majority and the opposition failing to gain a convincing position. Makuch said he had not made the final decision to leave and that he would have to discuss his situation with the prime minister and the president.
