The European Union is preparing to impose tariffs on US imports of 20 billion dollars if Washington continues to threaten the imposition of customs on auto imports from the European Union, according to the European Trade Commissioner today.

Cecilia Malmstrom, the EU trade commissioner, said the tariffs would apply if US President Donald Trump decided to impose tariffs on European car imports worth of $50 billion. Trump is due to host an EU delegation including Malmstrom and Jean-Claude Juncker, president of the European Commission, for talks at the White House today.

The talks come amid growing trade tensions between the EU and the United States after Washington imposed tariffs on imports of steel and aluminum from the European Union, forcing Europe to impose a tariff of 25 percent on some US imports
