Bruno Le Maire, the French finance minister, made the remarks in a meeting with the media in Paris as follows:

  • The euro area lacks the tools to deal with a new crisis.
  • It will take some time to see the full benefits of President Macron's reforms.
  • It is unlikely that there will be another spending cut to ensure that the deficit does not exceed the limit.
  • There are more important things for the European Union than the future of the UK.
  • Any decision gives the impression that you can leave the EU and maintain all the advantages would be suicidal to the EU.
