The US administration is to meet two senior Chinese officials on Friday in a bid to ease tensions three weeks before a summit between Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Argentina.

Some interpreted the meeting in Washington as a calming point between the two countries after they exchanged trade sanctions. The second meeting of the "Diplomatic and Security Dialogue" comes after a first meeting in April 2017 as part of efforts to revive the US-China relations decided by the two heads of state.

"The United States is not trying to contain China, but we want justice and reciprocity," US Ambassador to the United States Terje Pranstad told reporters on Thursday.

The diplomat said dialogue should allow for "open and open" exchange of views on many issues

North Korea will also be on the agenda as Washington wants to keep pressure on Pyongyang, which for its part calls for easing international sanctions in return for progress on the road to nuclear disarmament.

The US and Chinese presidents are expected to meet on the sidelines of the G20 summit on November 30 and December 1 in Argentina.
