Japan's top spokesman Yoshihida Suga said G7 leaders will likely to discuss global economic issues and concerns about US trade policy, adding that it was important to maintain free and open trade in accordance with WTO rules.

US President Donald Trump, who is due to attend the G7 meetings in Canada, imposed a 25 percent tariff on steel last week and 10 percent on aluminum for Canada, Mexico and the European Union for reasons of national security.

G7 finance ministers met last week and rebuked the United States over tariffs.
