U.S. CPI rose less than expected in September due to a sluggish rise in the cost of rent and falling energy prices, as underlying inflationary pressures began to cool.

The consumer price index rose by 0.1 percent last month after rising by 0.2 percent in August. In the 12-month period to September, the consumer price index slowed to 2.3 percent from 2.7 percent in August.

Excluding food and energy components, the CPI rose by 0.1% for the second month in a row, as the core index rose by 0.2% in May, June and July. For the 12 months to September, the core CPI rose by 2.2%.
