Italian President Sergio Matrella may choose the new prime minister either on Wednesday or Thursday, the Italian daily Corriere della Sera reported. No further details were reported.

The Italian president is in talks today as the country waits for news about whether an unknown law professor who has no political experience will be approved to become the new prime minister.

The populist parties - the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement and the Lega anti-immigrant party - have announced a joint agreement to name Giuseppe Conte, a lawyer and member of the 5-star movement, as the leader of the eurozone's third largest economy.
