Japanese shares close higher in first session of the week

Japanese stocks ended higher on Monday, with the paper, shipbuilding and communications sectors leading the gains. By closing, the Nikkei 225 rose by 0.55% to a fresh 5-year high of 24,275 points.

The US dollar rose against the yen to 114.04, its highest since early November, while the euro rose against the yen to 132.31.

European stocks rose on early morning trading, with the STOXX50E gaining 0.5% as optimism about the trade war rose through a new agreement between the United States, Mexico and Canada, which helped the global markets enter the fourth quarter of the year positively.
