The Italian government meets to discuss the new budget

Italian deputy Prime Minister Luigi Di Maio said senior officials of Italy's Eurosceptic government will meet on Wednesday to discuss next year's budget. Di Maio cited ambitious spending plans that raised concerns about financial markets.

Di Maio said the government would hold several meetings on the budget and the government would only apply EU fiscal rules if it did not hinder its reform program. Giuseppe Conti, the Italian prime minister, said last week the ruling coalition had reached a compromise on the outline of the budget.

The government needs to approve its fiscal plan for next year by September, and the draft budget must be submitted to the European Commission by mid-October.
