US President Donald Trump told his Mexican counterpart who elected recently in a letter that the quick renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) would bring more jobs to both countries, but warned against taking different route otherwise.

In his letter to Andres Manuel Lopez, who won the presidential election earlier this month, Trump said he looked forward to working closely with Mexico to build a great relationship, referring to trade, security and immigration. The move comes after 18 tense months between Trump and outgoing Mexican President Pena Nieto.

After weeks of slow negotiations, trade negotiators from Mexico are heading to Washington this week to revive the talks, and Trump said on Monday he expected something from NAFTA.

Negotiations on reformulate the agreement began last August at the request of Trump, who blames the NAFTA for the US trade deficit with Mexico.
