U.S. and Chinese officials are due to resume trade talks on Wednesday amid speculation that the US president will not be making real progress. Discussions among mid-level officials could lead to a framework for further negotiations.
Both the United States and China are preparing to impose new tariffs on Thursday (August 23rd). Trump has threatened to charge all of the more than $500 billion of Chinese goods unless his demands are met.
The talks are the first formal talks since the US Commerce Secretary met with China's economic advisor in May.
